The Hellenic Olympic Committee announced Monday that Vassilis Dimitriadis — a Greek giant slalom star who participated in the 1998, 2002 and 2006 Winter Games — will be the first torchbearer. Toronto student Niki Georgiadou will be the last, carrying the torch into the Panathenian Stadium for the handover ceremony.

Neo Kosmos Reports: Main opposition PASOK party and its leader George Papandreou posted a landslide election victory on Sunday in Greece's snap election, garnering 43.97 percent of the vote with 96 percent of the nationwide vote counted. In 325 BC, northern India was conquered by Alexander the Great, a Macedonian (and also an Indo-European) king. Alexander had already conquered the whole Persian Empire, and he also conquered northern India (modern Pakistan) as part of that. Alexander didn't stay very long though. He left after a couple of years and went back to Babylon, where he died.
Still, Alexander had a lasting effect on India. Alexander left behind several thousand Greek soldiers, to keep an eye on things. These soldiers had with them writers, artists, sculptors, and teachers, and they built Greek cities in Afghanistan and in the Indus valley. The Indians learned about a lot of Greek culture this way, and the Greeks learned a lot of Indian ideas too.

Gypsies
The Gypsies are an easily-identified, incredibly distinct, and bitterly hated non-European race dispersed throughout Eastern Europe and the Balkans. The Roma people, a sub-group of the greater Romani race that occupies Europe, emigrated as nomads from North India several centuries ago. The exact timeframe and circumstances incurring their relocation are unclear. They may have migrated for superior agricultural opportunities, they may have traveled westward on trade routes created by Alexander the Great, or they may have been fleeing from persecution in India by the invading Mujahidin of the Muslim sultanates there (Ghorids, Ghaznavids, or the Lodis of Delhi). The only certainty is that it took centuries and began at least over 500 years ago.

The Greek elections will take place on Sunday, October 4. After three weeks, Greek citizens will choose their new term prime minister that will guide them through the great economic challenges of the time and make crucial decisions for the country's future course.
On September 11, 2009, Kathimerini said that a poll conducted on September 7 and 8 gave Pasok 151 seats (41 per cent) and New Democracy 96 seats (35.5 per cent).
The Communist Party would get 8.5 per cent, the Popular Orthodox Rally party (LAOS) 7 per cent and the Coalition of the Radical Left Syriza 4 per cent.
However, according to the today’s news reports, main opposition PASOK MP, former prime minister and party leader Costas Simitis, will not run for parliament in the elections. The reason was the rejection of Karamanlis regarding the PASOK leader George Papandreou's proposal to lead his party’s ballot in the Piraeus A' constituency or the Athens A' constituency.
It is remains to be seen whether the disagreement will be solved before the election date.

A sequel to the 2000 hit The Wog Boy, the movie reunites Nick Giannopoulos and Vince Colosimo as mates Steve and Frank, who travel from Melbourne to the Greek island of Mykonos to reclaim a family inheritance.
The original Wog Boy grossed $13.4 million at the box office and is one of Australia's most successful comedies to date.
Filming will begin in Melbourne and Greece in September.
An Australian decided to write a book about famous churches around the world. So he bought a plane ticket and took a trip to England thinking that he would start by working his way across Europe.
On his first day he was inside a church taking photographs when he noticed a golden telephone mounted on the wall with a sign that read "$10,000.00 per call".
The Australian, being intrigued, asked a priest who was strolling by what the telephone was used for. The priest replied that it was a direct line to heaven and that for $10,000.00 you could talk to God.
The Australian thanked the priest and went on his way.
Next stop was in France. There, at a very large cathedral, he saw the same golden telephone with the same sign under it. He wondered if this was the same kind of telephone he saw in England and he asked a nearby nun
what its purpose was.
She told him that it was a direct line to heaven and that for
$10,000.00 he could talk to God.
"O.K., thank you," said the Australian.
He then travelled to Spain, Italy, Germany, Sweden and Czech Republic.
In every church he saw the same golden telephone with the same "$10,000.00 per call" sign under it. The Australian, upon leaving the Netherlands, decided to travel to Greece to see if Greeks had the same phone.
He arrived in Greece, and again, in the first church he entered, there was the same golden telephone, but this time the sign under it read, "40 cents per call."
The Australian was surprised so he asked the priest about the sign.
"Father, I've travelled all over Europe and I've seen this same golden telephone in many churches. I'm told that it is a direct line to Heaven, but in all of Europe the price was $10,000 per call. Why is it so cheap here?"
The priest smiled and answered,
"You're in Greece now, my son - it's a local call."

Zeibekiko is common in Greece and areas around the world with large Greek populations. Throughout history it has been known as an intensely personal dance where people can express their individuality. Only one man at a time may dance it. If another got up, it would be a cause for conflict and possible violence. However, in the 21st century a certain dance etiquette has evolved, seeing men either wait until the dancing man stops and then begin dancing, or standing up so the dancer gives them his place. In contemporary society, women may dance also the Zeibekiko. Traditionally, applause was not sought nor commonly given, out of respect. This did not, however, lessen creativity, with dancers performing feats such as standing on a glass of wine or a chair or fireplace, or picking up a table, adding a sense of little braggadocio and humor. Zeibekiko songs are popular and vast - some of the more traditional Zeibekiko songs are To Zeimpekiko Ths Eudokias.
