Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss Greek and Roman love poetry, from the Greek poet Sappho and her erotic descriptions of romance on Lesbos, to the love-hate poems of the Roman writer Catullus. The source of many of the images and metaphors of love that have survived in literature through the centuries. We begin with the words of Sappho, known as the Tenth Muse and one of the great love poets of Ancient Greece:

“Love, bittersweet and inescapable,
creeps up on me and grabs me once again”

Such heartfelt imploring by Sappho and other writers led poetry away from the great epics of Homer and towards a very personal expression of emotion. These outpourings would have been sung at intimate gatherings, accompanied by the lyre and plenty of wine. The style fell out of fashion only to be revived first in Alexandria in the third Century BC and again by the Roman poets starting in the 50s BC. Catullus and his peers developed the form, employing powerful metaphors of war and slavery to express their devotion to their Beloved – as well as the ill treatment they invariably received at her hands!

So why did Greek poetry move away from heroic narratives and turn to love in the 6th Century BC? How did the Romans transform the genre? And what effect did the sexual politics of the day have on the form?

A British genealogist claims Johnny Depp, whose latest "Pirates of the Caribbean" saga opens in theaters Friday, is related to Britain's royal family.

What, and he wasn't invited to Prince William's and Kate's wedding? Outrage! He'd have worn a better hat than Princess Beatrice.

The Oscar-nominated actor is still more than an ocean away from the throne. Nick Barratt told the UK's Sunday Mirror that Depp, 47, and Queen Elizabeth II, 85, share the same great-(repeat last word 18 times) grandfather, making them 20th cousins. The Mirror reports Depp's more immediate forebears were farmers who settled in Virginia in the 1700s.

"I believe the balance of probability is that there is indeed a link between Depp and the royals," Barrett explains. "I doubt we'll ever be able to prove it 100 percent." Not even if Lillibet has a "Wino Forever" tattoo?

Greece in Ruins

Greek legends disappear one by one

There is a memorable scene in Theo Angelopoulos’s award-winning film “Ulysses’ Gaze” when an exiled filmmaker played by Harvey Keitel is being driven from Greece into Albania by a cabbie portrayed by the late Thanassis Veggos. Their journey is hampered by a snowstorm and as the two men share a drink from the same bottle, Veggos delivers a lament for his fading homeland. “Greece is dying,” he says. “We’re dying as a people. We’ve come full circle; I don’t know how many years, among broken stones and statues... and we’re dying. But if Greece is going to die, she’d better do it quickly because the agony lasts too long and makes too much noise.”

Ironically, it was Veggos’s death last week that made these words ring truer than ever. Succumbing on May 3 to a long battle with ill health, Veggos’s passing seemed to confirm that Greece is watching its true heroes agonizingly disappear one by one. The 84-year-old had entertained Greek cinema, theater and TV audiences for more than 50 years with his own brand of frantic comedy and everyman pathos. But his reputation as a hardworking, honest and generous man was just as significant in establishing him as a respected and loved figure as his acting talent.

“I have been running fast all my life,” he told Kathimerini’s Maria Katsounaki in an interview a couple of years ago. “But I have never been able to break through the finishing tape because they keep moving it. Whenever I got close, they moved it a few meters away.”

Veggos has now crossed the finishing line and he will find a number of worthy competitors on the other side of the tape. He died three days after another respected figure passed away. Apostolos “Lakis” Santas died at the age of 89 on April 30. He had been one of the two men who climbed up to the Acropolis on May 30, 1941 -- a month after the Nazis had occupied Athens -- to tear down the swastika flag. It was one of the most significant and symbolic acts of resistance by Greeks during the Second World War. It led to Santas, and his partner Manolis Glezos, being imprisoned and tortured.

Santas died a few days after much-admired singer-songwriter Nikos Papazoglou drew his last breath. Many Greeks had a special fondness for Papazoglou not just because of his music but also because he shunned the trappings of fame. Papazoglou died just over a month after one of the men he collaborated most closely with, composer and lyricist Manolis Rasoulis slipped away. Like Papazoglou, he was loved for his great contribution to Greek music but also his depth as a human being.

A week after Rasoulis’s death, Greece also lost playwright and screenwriter Iakovos Kambanellis. Like the others, Kambanellis also left his mark on Greece, where he is considered to be the founding father of the country’s modern theater. Kambanellis worked closely with director Nikos Koundouros, who gave Veggos his first big break in his 1954 film “The Magic City.” Like Veggos’s character remarked, it feels as if Greece has come full circle.* greekcity.com.au *

Heathrow Bolt of lightning

It was an awesome example of nature’s power on a stormy night in London.

As this flight came into Heathrow, a jagged bolt of lightning smashed into the roof, right above the pilots’ heads.

The powerful jolt of electricity passed right through the body of the Airbus A380 before shooting out to continue its journey to the ground.

Amazingly, the Emirates service from Dubai landed safely minutes later, with not even a scratch and its 500 passengers and crew unscathed.

Diana death photo in Cannes doc - When will she rest in peace???

CANNES -- An unseen and unwanted British documentary is generating a firestorm before it comes to Cannes on Friday, mostly because it reportedly showcases a grisly photo of Princess Diana inside the vehicle in the Paris car crash that claimed her life on Aug. 31, 1997.

But the real controversy that should be raging is what actor-filmmaker Keith Allen presents as near-fact in Unlawful Killing: That the British establishment, including the Royal Family, arranged her murder.

Also controversial is the way Allen's team is exploiting Cannes. People are assuming the doc is in an official film festival program. It is not. Instead, Allen & company are screening Unlawful Killing in the Cannes Marche, an unregulated marketplace where anyone can show anything, short of hardcore porn, if they buy time in a Cannes theatre. Audiences are allowed in by invitation.

Marketplace screenings are normally set up to help sell movies to distributors. In this case, Allen's goal seems to be to generate publicity, most of it negative so far. Allen is a well-known British comedian and actor. He played the Sheriff of Nottingham in the recent BBC series Robin Hood.

But he also spent the past three years sorting through evidence from the inquest into Diana's death and doing interviews. His film title comes from the ruling in that inquest, a British legal result that establishes that persons unknown are criminally responsible for a death.

Watching the lurid trailer and excerpts online will quickly convince viewers that Allen is pinning the blame on the Royals, their aristocratic circle and operatives in the British secret service. "Presidents have been killed for less," the narrator says after commentators establish how Diana was "trouble" for the Royal Family.

British journalist and novelist Noel Botham, who wrote a book called The Murder of Princess Diana, says it again in the film. "There can be no doubt she was actually murdered," he says. British broadcaster Piers Morgan is also featured, spinning accusations about British spies. "We've all been to James Bond movies, thanks," he says sarcastically. "We know the secret services do a lot of dark stuff."

Chiron Bids Adieu To Aquarius: The Wounded Social Network

What is Chiron? An asteroid, and a pain in the ass mythological figure also known as “the wounded healer.” Chiron bids farewell to the constellation of Aquarius after spending seven years (Feb. 21, 2005 and Feb. 8, 2011) triggering every social, group and friendship wound we’ve ever felt. The Chiron in Aquarius finale packed a series of punches on the collective since 2005. Sorting out the needs of the group versus the needs of the individual is never a simple affair.

Do we lose ourselves in groups — devolving into sheep, girls gone wild or conformists? Or do groups inspire, give us strength in numbers and sense of belonging, and unify us around a kindred theme? Are we prone to the horrible disease of “group think” where we suddenly lose the ability to make rational, individually informed decisions? Or do we succumb to the lowest vibration or caveman denominator in our midst? We’re no strangers to group contagion, the stupidity of trends and “Lord of the Flies.” Chiron in Aquarius at its worst: Super Bowl Sunday and Facebook.

In our social circles, networks and other such collectives, the shadows of competition, rivalry, backstabbing and envy often loom heavy. During the final days of Chiron in Aquarius we would expect to see these issues to reach a fever pitch. Chiron in Aquarius has been dubbed the “wounded community.” Where have our associations with groups, families, and bigger collectives been healing? Where have they only served to open up old wounds?

Usually it’s a combination of both, but with Chiron transits there’s the feeling of pouring salt into the wound in order to bring our attention to it. Aquarius rules our friendships, so it’s not surprising to hear people lamenting, “I don’t know who my real friends are anymore” or “Who can I trust?” Chiron in Aquarius taught us that true friends are precious, extremely rare and perhaps a dying breed.

Look to the placement of Chiron in your natal horoscope to see where your psyche contains the deepest wounding from childhood and consequently needs the most healing. But this is the kind of healing that one must give to oneself. Only through our own efforts, life experience and wisdom gained can we heal the depth of our Chiron wounds.

The lessons typically culminate in some sort of integrated fashion around the age of fifty during the Chiron Return provided we’ve done the work. Every seven years we have the opportunity to work an another layer of healing, similar to Saturn cycles. With Chiron in Aquarius, we were given the opportunity to honor and hopefully embrace our unique, eccentric, rebellious qualities despite the pain of earlier experiences of not fitting in, or feeling like a freak for being different.

The Greeks Of Armenia

This website running is my second project dedicated to Greeks of Armenia. In the spring of 2011 we are planning to open an exhibition dedicated to all Greek mothers in loving memory of my Pontic Greek mother Nina Lazareva (Lazaridou). She was born in  Madan village (Northern Armenia).  The photo collection includes images of almost all Greek settlements of Armenia.

My first ethnographic photographic exhibition was opened at the Consular Office of the Greek Embassy in Yerevan on the 27th of November, 2009.

Evangelos Koumbis

Evangelos was born in Preveza (northwestern part of Greece) in 1951 and lives now in Thessaloniki. He is Lt Gen (retired) and holds a low degree from the University of Athens. 

His interest in art emerged from the very early age as a pupil in the elementary school but should have passed decades after fount time and the opportunity to meet very gifted painters in Tsessaloniki who inspired and initiated him painting . Since then on he developed a voracious appetite visiting art museums, galleries, studing and practicing art . Later on in 2003 he took courses in oil and water color painting in the University of South Florida (USF) USA and until now has attended numerous workshops in Greece and abroad since he believes that art is education for life 
. 
He prefers an impressionist loose style with bold color brushstrokes and his paintings embrace a range of subjects , most prominently
