 VANCOUVER - The 2010 Olympic torch relay has barely started, and already somebody has put one of the 12,000 torches being used up for sale on eBay.

The starting bid is $2,500 US, and has attracted one bid in three days. The auction ends Saturday at 1:44 p.m.

It seems somewhat unpatriotic for a Canadian to turn around and sell their torch mere days after the Olympic flame reached Canada. But as it turns out, the seller probably isn’t Canadian — the torch is being sold from Athens, Greece.

The seller’s eBay name is Douramakos, and states that they have been selling Olympics memorabilia for 25 years.

“This is one of the first torches used in the torch relay in Greece,” reads the eBay listing.

“The gas canister was taken out from all torches by the organizers after each torch bearer finished their run.”

It is a fairly detailed listing — Douramakos has put up 15 photos of the torch. You can find it by searching “2010 Olympic torch” on the eBay site.

Torches are one of the most prized collectibles from the Olympics. Some are quite valuable — an Olympic torch from the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary is worth about $10,000 US.

 The story of the Greek pioneers in British Columbia is the story of Greek sailors who, having drifted up to the Pacific coast, remained and made their homes there. Such sailors, in addition to Capiotis, his son-in-law Chugranis of Victoria B.C., are Nick Stevenson Moreas of Ladner B.C. and many others of whom unfortunately no valid record is to be found.

One of the first Greeks to settle in Vancouver was old man John Deliyannis who was not certain as to the date of his arrival there, probably it was in 1882. In his younger days he was very prominent in the candy business. He passed away at a ripe old age.

George Kanaris was the proprietor of the Vancouver Fish and Oyster Co., the oldest retail fish market in Vancouver. George Berbinos was his partner. Kanaris was very prominent in the Greek Community affairs, having made large contribution to the founding of the Greek Orthodox Church of Vancouver. He made quite a fortune in real estate and owned several houses and properties. He passed away at the age of 65.

It was a wet, rainy, windy evening in Vancouver, the only Canadian city to host the newly acclaimed theatrical play based on the Trojan war, "Troades".  In the main hall of the Hellenic Community Center on Arbutus, the lead actress, Paola Hadjilambri, introduced the concept and history of the play explaining the Trojan story and its' characters.
The authentic Greek actors of Troades sang to Mikis Theodorakis' famous musical compositions as they walked around the stage dressed in their ancient costumes. The sharp eye of their humble director Leonidas Loizides followed the play as he sat nearby in the dark.
The live performance evoked many emotions and reactions from the audience; the despair and anguish that was dramatically portrayed by the actors on stage stirred many to tears.
The play is an anti-war statement and portrays the plight of women and children following the defeat of Troy at the Trojan war and brings alive the timeless message that there are neither winners nor losers at any war, but even through the disaster and despair caused by war, there is always hope and catharsis.
Directed by acclaimed theatre and film director Leonidas Loizides, with music by Mikis Theodorakis (composer of the "Zorba the Greek" film score).

Archaeologists surveying the world's oldest submerged town have found ceramics dating back to the end of the Neolithic era.
Their discovery suggests that Pavlopetri, off the southern Laconia coast of Greece, was occupied some 5,000 years ago - at least 1,200 years earlier than originally thought.

Excitement builds for Thursday's Olympic torch lighting

The Hellenic Olympic Committee announced Monday that Vassilis Dimitriadis — a Greek giant slalom star who participated in the 1998, 2002 and 2006 Winter Games — will be the first torchbearer. Toronto student Niki Georgiadou will be the last, carrying the torch into the Panathenian Stadium for the handover ceremony.

In between, the torch will travel through 22 districts, 42 municipalities, three municipal districts and one community. Organizers will conduct 36 lighting ceremonies, including two at archeological sites.

In 325 BC, northern India was conquered by Alexander the Great, a Macedonian (and also an Indo-European) king. Alexander had already conquered the whole Persian Empire, and he also conquered northern India (modern Pakistan) as part of that. Alexander didn't stay very long though. He left after a couple of years and went back to Babylon, where he died.

Still, Alexander had a lasting effect on India. Alexander left behind several thousand Greek soldiers, to keep an eye on things. These soldiers had with them writers, artists, sculptors, and teachers, and they built Greek cities in Afghanistan and in the Indus valley. The Indians learned about a lot of Greek culture this way, and the Greeks learned a lot of Indian ideas too.

The Greek elections will take place on Sunday, October 4. After three weeks, Greek citizens will choose their new term prime minister that will guide them through the great economic challenges of the time and make crucial decisions for the country's future course.

On September 11, 2009, Kathimerini said that a poll conducted on September 7 and 8 gave Pasok 151 seats (41 per cent) and New Democracy 96 seats (35.5 per cent).

The Communist Party would get 8.5 per cent, the Popular Orthodox Rally party (LAOS) 7 per cent and the Coalition of the Radical Left Syriza 4 per cent.

However, according to the today’s news reports, main opposition PASOK MP, former prime minister and party leader Costas Simitis, will not run for parliament in the elections. The reason was the rejection of Karamanlis regarding the PASOK leader George Papandreou's proposal to lead his party’s ballot in the Piraeus A' constituency or the Athens A' constituency.
It is remains to be seen whether the disagreement will be solved before the election date.

Wog Boy 2: Kings of Mykonos,

Screen Australia has announced it will help fund five Australian features, including Wog Boy 2: Kings Of Mykonos.

A sequel to the 2000 hit The Wog Boy, the movie reunites Nick Giannopoulos and Vince Colosimo as mates Steve and Frank, who travel from Melbourne to the Greek island of Mykonos to reclaim a family inheritance.

The original Wog Boy grossed $13.4 million at the box office and is one of Australia's most successful comedies to date.

Filming will begin in Melbourne and Greece in September.

An Australian decided to write a book about famous churches around the world. So he bought a plane ticket and took a trip to England thinking that he would start by working his way across Europe.

On his first day he was inside a church taking photographs when he noticed a golden telephone mounted on the wall with a sign that read "$10,000.00 per call".

The Australian, being intrigued, asked a priest who was strolling by what the telephone was used for. The priest replied that it was a direct line to heaven and that for $10,000.00 you could talk to God.
The Australian thanked the priest and went on his way.

Next stop was in France. There, at a very large cathedral, he saw the same golden telephone with the same sign under it. He wondered if this was the same kind of telephone he saw in England and he asked a nearby nun
what its purpose was.

She told him that it was a direct line to heaven and that for
$10,000.00 he could talk to God.

"O.K., thank you," said the Australian.

He then travelled to Spain, Italy, Germany, Sweden and Czech Republic.
In every church he saw the same golden telephone with the same "$10,000.00 per call" sign under it. The Australian, upon leaving the Netherlands, decided to travel to Greece to see if Greeks had the same phone.

He arrived in Greece, and again, in the first church he entered, there was the same golden telephone, but this time the sign under it read, "40 cents per call."

The Australian was surprised so he asked the priest about the sign.
"Father, I've travelled all over Europe and I've seen this same golden telephone in many churches. I'm told that it is a direct line to Heaven, but in all of Europe the price was $10,000 per call. Why is it so cheap here?"

The priest smiled and answered,

"You're in Greece now, my son - it's a local call."
