How to travel by train from London to Europe . . .BUT NOT GREECE

http://www.seat61.com/Europe-train-travel.htm
Lunch in London... Breakfast in Berlin
There's no need to fly from the UK to anywhere in Europe.  It's surprisingly easy, quick and comfortable to travel overland by train from London to just about anywhere:  Spain, Italy, Greece, Prague, Helsinki, Moscow...  The difficult bit is finding out how to do it and where to buy tickets.  That's where 'Seat 61' comes in!
This website will tell you the best routes, train times & approximate fares from London to major destinations all over Europe.  It will tell you what the trains are like, and the best way to buy your ticket.  Your carriage awaits.  Eurostar links the UK not just with Paris, but with destinations all over Europe.
You can travel from France to mainland Greece in less than 48 hours with great scenery on the way, by sleeper train to Italy then overnight cruise ferry to Greece with comfortable cabin, restaurants and bars onboard.  Sailing across blue seas under even bluer skies past the islands of Ithaca and Kefalonia is perhaps the nicest way of all to reach Greece.  A far more rewarding experience than 3 hours strapped to a seat on a plane, and it's practical and affordable, too.  Alternatively, you can travel overland by train all the way, a 3-day adventure by sleeping-car via Munich, Budapest and Bucharest.

HORRIFIC NEWS FOR 2011:  Greece cancels all international  trains connecting it with the rest of Europe...

Greece is to cut itself off from the rest of Europe.  With their economic situation dire, their government has
announced massive rail cuts.

This includes the cancelling from 13 February 2011 until further notice of all
international trains between Greece and Sofia, Belgrade, Bucharest and Istanbul.  Greece will be cut off from the rest of Europe, except by ferry from Italy.  So much for Greece being part of Europe, let alone in the EU!  It will become an island! So the journey, possible for over a century, will no longer be possible from February 2011, until or unless the international trains are reinstated.  We will post more updates as they become available.  The only way to reach Greece from western Europe is now via by ferry from Italy, see above.
It is believed that the international train 'Romania' from Bucharest and Sofia to Greece will terminate at Sofia.  The trains from Belgrade will terminate at Skopje.  Two buses a day link Skopje with Thessaloniki, at around 08:00 and 18:30, taking 4-5 hours.
