Baby grabs doctors hand during Caesarean
Fifteen seconds before Randy Atkins' daughter Nevaeh was born on 9 October 2012, he snapped a picture of something that even the doctor who delivered her has never seen before.
The photograph shows the baby's hand reaching out while she is still in the womb and grabbing the doctor's finger. Mr Atkins and his wife Alicia posted the picture on Facebook just before Christmas and it has since gone viral.
Mrs Atkins, who is herself a professional photographer, had the picture printed on canvas and gave a copy to gynaecologist Dr. Allan Sawyer, who delivered her daughter.
According to Facebook's statistics, Mrs Atkins' page was seen by more than 36,000 people in just one week since the photo was released.
NSW an oven as Temperatures soar
CNN) -- Soaring temperatures and strong winds have combined to create a "catastrophic" fire threat across the southeast Australian state of New South Wales.
Residents have been warned to remain vigilant as temperatures rise towards a predicted high of 43 degrees (109 degrees Fahrenheit) in the state capital of Sydney.
In some areas of the state, winds of more than 70 kilometers an hour (43 mph) were threatening to fan the flames of fires already burning. However, a change in wind direction had caused temperatures in certain parts of the state to fall, offering some relief.
A "catastrophic" fire risk has been declared in four areas of NSW, although the risk across 90% of the state is "severe" or above. A "catastrophic" warning carries the risk of significant loss of life and the destruction of many homes, according to the NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS).

The most comprehensive work on Ikaria has been done by the University of Athens, whose researchers studied islanders aged over 65. On average, the 8,000 residents live 10 years longer than most Europeans and in much better health to the end.
There are many significant factors about the islanders' lifestyle which might contribute to their longevity.
Even compared to a typical Mediterranean diet, Ikarians eat a lot of fish and vegetables, and relatively low levels of meat.
Six out of 10 of people aged over 90 are still physically active, compared with about 20% elsewhere. Most food is cooked in olive oil. Large quantities of wild greens and herbs are gathered from the hillsides for both food and medicinal purposes.
Many older people make a daily brew of mountain tea from dried herbs such as sage, thyme, mint, and chamomile, and sweeten it with honey from local bees. "It cures everything," claims Stamatis.
Many of the wild herbs are used by people all over the world as traditional remedies. They are rich in antioxidants and also contain diuretics which can lower blood pressure.
The researchers believe other elements of lifestyle are also significant.

This well known Turkish song was very popular among Anatolian Greeks and Armenians. It was recorded with Greek lyrics in 1960 by the popular laika duet of Manolis Angelopoulos and Yiota Lydia. The two Turkish versions presented here were both recorded in Greece - the first in 1960 by Ali Ugurlu as part of a series of 45 RPMs issued by RCA Victor and Olympic with Greek Anatolian musicians. The second Turksih version is a collaboration CD between the Turkish singer Dilek Koc and various Greek musicians produced by Music Corner in Athens. The second Greek version is a recording by the former Ethnic Folk Arts Center of NY of the Greek Pontian Papadopoulos Family Orchestra. Lazaros Papadopulos was at first a zurna player and then a clarinet player. His roots are among the former Pontian communities of the Siva/Sevastia region.

It's been a busy day at the market in downtown Volos. Angeliki Ioanitou has sold a decent quantity of olive oil and soap, while her friend Maria has done good business with her fresh pies.
But not a single euro has changed hands – none of the customers on this drizzly Saturday morning has bothered carrying money at all. For many, browsing through the racks of second-hand clothes, electrical appliances and homemade jams, the need to survive means money has been usurped.
"It's all about exchange and solidarity, helping one another out in these very hard times," enthused Ioanitou, her hair tucked under a floppy felt cap. "You could say a lot of us have dreams of a utopia without the euro."
In this bustling port city at the foot of Mount Pelion, in the heart ofGreece's most fertile plain, locals have come up with a novel way of dealing with austerity – adopting their own alternative currency, known as the Tem. As the country struggles with its worst crisis in modern times, with Greeks losing up to 40% of their disposable income as a result of policies imposed in exchange for international aid, the system has been a huge success. Organisers say some 1,300 people have signed up to the informal bartering network.
For users such as Ioanitou, the currency – a form of community banking monitored exclusively online – is not only an effective antidote to wage cuts and soaring taxes but the "best kind of shopping therapy". "One Tem is the equivalent of one euro. My oil and soap came to 70 Tem and with that I bought oranges, pies, napkins, cleaning products and Christmas decorations," said the mother-of-five. "I've got 30 Tem left over. For women, who are worst affected by unemployment, and don't have kafeneia [coffeehouses] to go to like men, it's like belonging to a hugely supportive association."

Heatwave in Australia
Batten down the hatches and grab the air conditioning remote, Australia, you’re in for a heatwave (an actual one) this week. Let us explain why it’s going to be so hot, and what you can do to beat the heat.
This heatwave — which is defined as five days straight of temperatures five degrees above average — is being caused by a large mass of warm air moving from its previous spot over the centre of Australia to the rest of the interior of the country.
That warm air means business, too. Temperatures around the interior of the country are set to reach the mid- to high-40s over the next few days. Some parts of the country are set to reach 47°C tomorrow — three degrees off the highest temperature ever recorded in Australia.
The warm air is being pushed by cool fronts all over the country, making the lives of those in the interior miserable right through to mid-next week. Even capital cities like Melbourne will swelter, with temperatures set to hit 40.2°C tomorrow.

Soup Sister and Broth Brother
Warming hearts... one bowl at a time
Soup Sisters and Broth Brothers is a non-profit charitable social enterprise dedicated to providing comfort to women, children and youth through the making, sharing and donating of soup.
Anyone can be a Soup Sister and a Broth Brother . Simply join us in one of our soup-making sessions that will provide hundreds of litres of soup to women shelters and programs for youth in crisis right across the country!
The concept is simple. Soup Sisters and Broth Brothers are year-round programs where participants pay a $50 registration fee to participate in a soup-making event at a local professional kitchen under the guidance of a chef facilitator. Each event produces approximately 150-200 servings of nourishing soup that are delivered fresh to a local shelter. Events are social evenings with lively conversation, chopping, laughter and warm kitchen camaraderie that culminate in a simple, sit-down supper of soup, salad, bread and wine for all participants.
Soup Sisters and Broth Brothers was founded in 2009 by Calgarian Sharon Hapton who had a very simple belief in the power of soup as a nurturing and nourishing gesture that could make a tangible difference. Hapton believed that two of societies most prevalent issues, domestic abuse and youth homelessness would benefit from the care and warmth that comes in a bowl of soup. A powerful message that says 'we care' is now being delivered to over 20 residential shelters across the country through home-made delicious soup made with the finest ingredients.
Hundreds of community people are coming together across the country to produce over 8000 servings of fresh and delicious soups for women, children and youth each month. Since March of 2009, over 60,000 containers of soup have been delivered to shelters from East to West, and there is a growing network of over 5500 Soup Sisters and Broth Brothers participants across the country.
