'Eat, Pray, Love'

The trailer for the Julia Roberts' vehicle 'Eat, Pray, Love' has been released.

The movie, based on the best-selling memoir of the same name, follows Roberts as Elizabeth Gilbert, a divorced woman who sets out on a year-long journey to Italy, India and Bali, where she, of course, eats, prays and finds love.

'Eat' hits theaters this summer and also stars Javier Bardem, James Franco and Billy Crudup.

Create Greek Comedy and Tragedy masks

For theater aficionados, there is no symbol of the craft more iconic and than the paired Greek "comedy" and "tragedy" masks. Sculpting these masks in clay is a fun, easy project, and can produce a great gift for the theater lover in your life. These instructions make miniature masks, but the same process can pertain to masks of any size. Use them to make anything from a wall hanging to a lapel pin.

4 year old Hitler and his sisters in danger?

A US appeals court has ruled a couple who gave their children Nazi-inspired names should not regain custody, citing the risk of serious injury to them.
Adolf Hitler Campbell, 4, and his sisters, JoyceLynn Aryan Nation, 3, and Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie, 2, were taken from their New Jersey home in 2009.
The case first came to public attention in December 2008 after a shop refused to decorate a birthday cake for Adolf.
A family court had earlier found there was insufficient evidence of abuse.
But on Thursday, the appeals panel determined that social workers had proved the need for protective services for the three children.
The panel found that the parents, who both suffer from unspecified physical and psychological disabilities, had "recklessly created a risk of serious injury to their children by failing to protect the children from harm and failing to acknowledge and treat their disabilities".
The judges also noted that Deborah Campbell had recently passed a letter to a neighbour saying her husband had threatened "to have me killed or kill me himself".

Immigration closing some doors

Canadian immigration plans to increase economic immigration in its 2010 plan. However, it is increasingly the case that you will need to have a job offer to come under the skilled worker category. Recently the number of in demand occupations that qualify under the skilled worker category has been reduced further to 29 in-demand occupations.
Immigration Minister Kenney  had the following to say:
“When I met with my provincial colleagues last week, they all stressed the importance of economic immigration.”
“As we recover from the recession, increasing economic immigration will help ensure employers have the workers they need to supplement our domestic labour supply.”
The latest Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) plan for 2010 is for 240,000–265,000 immigrants, in the family and humanitarian immigration categories. It is expected that levels of immigration will be close to the 265,000 upper limit of the plan. This will mean an increased number of economic migrants including more immigrants under the provincial nominee category than ever before. Normally levels of immigration are in the middle of the immigration plan.
If you wish to come under the skilled worker category you will either have to have a job offer or will have to come under one of the new 29 in-demand occupations. The 29 in-demand occupations were chosen after analysis of labour market information and discussions with provinces territories and others. If applying under the occupation list there will be a maximum of 20,000 applications per year. A maximum of 1,000 applications per occupation will be accepted. There will be no limit on the number of applications if you have a job offer.
Immigration Minister Kenney also had the following to say about levels of immigration into Canada:
Canada will continue to welcome historically high numbers of immigrants, but we need to manage the number of new applications or risk creating new backlogs and longer processing times.”
“We have more than enough applications on hand now to fill many of our needs, and we want to be fair to those people who have been waiting the longest.”
You will also be required to submit results of an independent language test before being considered for the federal skilled worker and Canadian Experience Class immigration categories. There are also language requirements for other Canadian immigration categories.
The Canadian Government brought in a new law in 2008 that enables the Government to rapidly increase or reduce the number of economic immigrants that are accepted into Canada taking into account demand for jobs in Canada and the need to reduce the backlog of applications.
Since the new ministerial instructions the backlog of federal skilled worker applications has been reduced from 640,000 to 380,000 applications. Previously, it was taking up to six years to process Canadian skilled worker applications. Under the new system the majority of applications were processed in six to 12 months. However, the first quarter of 2010 has seen an increase in the number of applications that has resulted in processing delays. Immigration Minister Kenney had the following to say:
“These changes bring Canada in line with the practices of the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, our main competitors for skilled immigrants.”
“They help match the supply of applicants to our processing capacity and today’s post-recession job market needs. This is the only responsible way to manage our immigration system.”
The changes to the Canadian immigration system mean that it is now more difficult for many to gain entry to Canada. It is now the case that you will probably need to have a job offer to gain entry as a skilled immigrant to Canada. The last few years have seen significant changes in the immigration systems of many Countries around the World. If you wish to emigrate to a particular Country it is probably advisable to apply sooner rather than later

LEO 2010 ~ Attracting All That You Need, Desire & Deserve

As you allow both Spirit & ego to co-exist, assigning them both tasks best suited to their skills (and nature), you will discover your authentic Self. Sometimes we don't allow the authenticity that would enable us to create fulfilling lives. Be authentic - by any means necessary. You can and will survive all the humiliations and defeats and ultimately emerge stronger! Children are the manifestation of a certain conflict (men/women) being handled creatively (coming together in harmony). Stress and strife are just as necessary as peace and tranquility. Accept all of it as part of living on the earth plane. No matter how spiritually committed or selflessly loving we attempt to become, our natures don't die. Practice honoring your true nature.
Do not shy away from your intuition just because you want to avoid conflict. Follow your feeling all the way and then consciously decide how to proceed. If you back off, chastising your Self for some natural impulse (to have things a certain way), you stop any possibility for peaceful resolution within. You usually only get one opportunity to respond to life's challenges (the first time) with any integrity. Any chance for resolution after your initial reaction, disintegrates as time goes on. Honor the vital force within (your nature) and it won't destroy you. Dishonor it and it will eat you alive.
You can have peace, by your own definition. Sometimes you have to lose something precious to you (sometimes it is a part of ourselves that must go) in order to redefine your true values. When you go through that kind of loss, it can make you question all your beliefs and any faith in your Self to make decisions for your Self. That's okay - that is part of it. All that you need, desire and deserve is ALWAYS PROVIDED!! whether you can see it at the time or not.
Take advantage of this time to:
Re-View ~
your life (from a Higher vantage point)
Re-Assess ~ your plan (what needs tweaking?)
Re-Consider ~ your options (you have more than you think)
Re-Evaluate ~ your philosophies, beliefs and what you hold to be true (in the present moment)
Re-Connect ~ with your intuition (open the channels)
Re-Form ~ your being (from the inside out)
Re-Write ~ your personal story (of the upcoming 12 yrs)
Re-New ~ your sense of Self (at this Higher level of consciousness)

Use this time to re-search your life for any major cracks in your foundation - any instability - any blockages - any festering wounds - any excess baggage - now is your opportunity to RELEASE IT ALL ... PERMANENTLY!!

Moscow is burning

Deaths in Moscow have doubled and are now averaging 700 people a day amid a sweltering heat wave and poisonous smog from wildfires, a top Russian health official said Monday.
Scorching heat and acrid smoke blanketed Moscow as smog from raging forest and peat fires shrouded Russia’s capital for a third week.
“The average death rate in the city during normal times is between 360 and 380 people per day. Today, we are around 700,” Andrei Seltsovsky, Moscow’s health department chief, said.
Firefighters battled wildfires covering 1,740 square km in what the chief state weather forecaster said he believed to be Russia’s worst heat wave in a millennium.
Alexander Frolov, head of Russia’s weather service, said judging by historic documents, the heat wave could be unprecedented in up to 1,000 years. “Our ancestors haven’t observed a heat like that within 1,000 years,” Frolov said.

Much of western and central Russia is suffering through a severe drought, thought to be the worst since 1972, in what has been the hottest summer since record-keeping began 130 years ago. This year’s harvest was already in trouble, and the fires have finished off vast fields of golden wheat and other crops.
Temperatures have topped 95F (35C) for much of the past three weeks, with an all-time high of close to 100F (38C) recorded in Moscow last week.

Graeme Godbaz - New Zealand Treasure

Graeme Godbaz was born in Wellington in 1936 and spent his early life in the Nelson/Marlborough region, where he grew to love the beautiful scenery that New Zealand has to offer.
Graeme was good at drawing from a very early age and excelled in this throughout his education but was unable to undertake further studies so embarked on a varied commercial business career.
He took up painting in oils as a hobby in his 20's and was pleasantly surprised to find that there was a demand for his work, but it was not until he retired that he took up his brushes again, this time painting in acrylics.
His passion is the New Zealand landscape and his bold and colourful panoramic paintings display both a sound grasp of draughtsmanship and excellent composition.
Although based in Auckland he travels regularly throughout NZ in search of that special scene. He describes his art as bold realism.
His early paintings include a private Greek Collection.

Dark Sun Astrology helped escalate the Trojan War lolol

The Baron is the finest 5000 year old ex-super villain astrologer you’ll ever meet.
Bio:
Born in Babylon in 3579 BCE to a family of priest-astrologers, he was an impetuous youth. He graduated, with honors, from Babylon University (Go Scorpions!) with degrees in Astrology and Planetary Magic, and a minor in Doom Studies. After a brief career as an advisor to the king, he found himself dissatisfied helping the corrupt monarch plot successful military campaigns, and bored with helping farmers bring in a good harvest. Tired of worldy concerns, he decided to pursue something interesting: Super-Villainy!

A distinguished career followed:
- Helped Escalate Trojan War
- Instrumental in Fall of Roman Empire
-Gave Charlemagne massive wedgie

For a complete Resume, check Monster.com
But all good (and evil) things come to an end. The Baron withdrew from the material plane in the late 11th century and settled into a quaint cabin on the astral. After centuries of meditation, he set a new and possibly suicidal challenge: Use his potent skills to help the humans, despite the obvious futility. Needing a body, he possessed the finest of his descendants and set about spreading his word far and wide. These days the Baron works as a mortal astrologer, dividing his time between writing, teaching, and reading charts.

August Astrological Oppositions

A T-Square is an aspect pattern that includes an opposition of (at least) 2 planets, with the opposing planets square another planet, forming a T.
With so many oppositions at once, it can feel like SOMETHING HAS TO BREAK!!!
But how far is too far– and what happens when you get to your breaking point?
Oppositions open the potential for more awareness. We are looking at something from a completely opposite perspective. It takes the ability to look at something to become conscious of it. So oppositions create more consciousness.
We may not welcome oppositions because they don’t always show us what we’d like to see. Becoming more conscious also means realizing differences, inconsistencies, doubts, and that contains the potential for tension, and conflict. Our religion has taught us that consciousness is the original sin. And that consciousness leads to nothing but problems because our true state of innocence is disrupted by our interest in becoming like God, in knowing the difference between good and evil, in becoming conscious and not innocent.
When we have an opposition in our charts or by transit, we realize there are 2 sides of the story; we lose our innocence yet we gain consciousness. It truly is a choice. Yet, if we chose to be innocent, we give up opportunities to take responsibility for ourselves, our lives, our world. It’s expected that someone else to step in and take care of us, no matter what we did because we are innocent. It’s a great philosophy. Until you have to live in the world. As an adult.

Greek Gods Pagoto Ice Cream

Greek Gods brand "Pagoto" ice cream has shown up at my local Gelson's in Los Angeles. It's not really Greek (the company is in Mountlake Terrace, WA), and the Greek Gods yogurts have not met with much approval on this board.
But we thought the chocolate fig flavor ice cream was great. It is thick and moderately elastic, with a texture somewhere between gelato and the ultra-stretchiness of Persian ice cream. (See below*) As poster *Snapdragon* on the NW Board commented, "chocolate fig" is a bit of a misnomer--it's really a strongly flavored fig ice cream with dark chocolate chips. *Snapdragon* found it "too figgy," but PayOrPlay Jr. and I both exclaimed in ecstacy after our first bite--an explosively figgy flavor, indeed, which we both loved.
We also tried the Honey Pomegranate flavor, which is not as impressive: the flavoring is much more subtle and mainly the honey comes through. I prefer the "Sheer Bliss" brand pomegranate ice cream (especially their chocolate chip), as well as Haagen-Dasz' excellent version (H-D also has a killer pomegranate ice cream bar with chocolate shell). And in L.A. we also have local Persian ice cream vendors like Mashti Malone, who sell pomegranate flavor some of the time.
Still to try: the "baklava" flavor, which I understand is a creamy smooth ice cream with the flavors of baklava, rather than something studded with chunks of phyllo and nuts. I look forward to it.

Greek Orthodox Church

The Greek Orthodox Church (Greek: Ελληνορθόδοξη Εκκλησία, Hellēnorthódoxē Ekklēsía) is the body of several churches[1][2][3] within the larger communion of the Orthodox Church, sharing a common cultural tradition, and whose liturgy is traditionally conducted in Koine Greek,[4] the original language of the New Testament.[5]

Historically, the term Greek Orthodox has also been used to describe all Eastern Orthodox Churches, since "Greek" in "Greek Orthodox" can refer to the Greek heritage of the Byzantine Empire.During eight centuries of Christian history most major intellectual, cultural, and social developments in the Christian church took place within the Empire or in the sphere of its influence, thus most parts of the liturgy, traditions, and practices of the church of Constantinople were adopted by all, and still provide the basic patterns of contemporary Orthodoxy. However, the appellation "Greek" was abandoned by Slavic and other national orthodox churches in connection with their peoples' national awakenings, from as early as the 10th century A.D.  *Wikipedia*

Why was the Bible written in Greek?
  • Only the New Testament is written in Greek. The Old Testament is in Hebrew. And the reason for both is that they were the main language spoken in the area they were written in at the time.
  • The Old Testament was written almost entirely in Hebrew. However, Hebrew eventually fell out of use for everyday purposes, with the Palestinian Jews speaking Aramaic and the Jews of the diaspora speaking Greek. During the early second century BCE, a Greek translation, known as the Septuagint (or LXX for short), was created for use by the diaspora Jews. However, the Palestinian Jews continued to use the Hebrew Bible.
The New Testament was originally written in Greek because Alexander compelled the people in the countries he conquered to speak Greek rather than their own language. All Hellenized countries spoke Greek, and anybody wanting to deal with them had to know Greek. It was thus the common language at that time, so many of the early Christians and potential converts spoke Greek.
  • The other reason the Bible was written in Greek was because it was a very precise language with five tenses to enable narrow definitions and the explanation of abstract concepts, especially spiritual and relational, which in other languages such as English just cannot be easily done. (That is one of the reasons for the many translations of the Bible.)

The Fall of Constantinople

The Fall of Constantinople 1/3

Emperor Constantine [272 - 337 A.D.]

Caesar Flavius Valerius Aurelius Constantinus Augustus (27 February c. 272 22 May 337), commonly known in English as Constantine I, Constantine the Great, or (among Eastern Orthodox, Coptic Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox and Byzantine Catholic Christians) Saint Constantine (pronounced /ˈkɒnstɛntaɪn/), was Roman emperor from 306, and the undisputed holder of that office from 324 until his death in 337. Best known for being the first Christian Roman emperor, Constantine reversed the persecutions of his predecessor, Diocletian, and issued (with his co-emperor Licinius) the Edict of Milan in 313, which proclaimed religious toleration throughout the empire.

The Byzantine liturgical calendar, observed by the Eastern Orthodox Church and Eastern Catholic Churches of Byzantine rite, lists both Constantine and his mother Helena as saints. Although he is not included in the Latin Church's list of saints, which does recognize several other Constantines as saints, he is revered under the title "The Great" for his contributions to Christianity.

Constantine also transformed the ancient Greek colony of Byzantium into a new imperial residence, Constantinople, which would remain the capital of the Byzantine Empire for over one thousand years.

The legacy of King Constantine II

Constantine II (Greek: Κωνσταντίνος Βʹ, Βασιλεύς των Ελλήνων, Konstantínos Βʹ, Vasiléfs ton Ellínon; born 2 June 1940) was King of the Hellenes from 1964 until the abolition of the monarchy in 1973.
The sixth and last monarch of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, he is usually referred to in Greece as ο τέως βασιλιάς ("the former king"), or with the pejorative terms ο Τέως ("the Former") or o Γκλύξμπουργκ ("the Glücksburg").
As a male-line descendant of Christian IX of Denmark he retains his title as Prince of Denmark, although constitutional changes removed the Greek cadet branch from the line of Danish succession.
He succeeded his father Paul in March 1964, being styled Constantine II, King of the Hellenes (Greek: Κωνσταντῖνος Βʹ, Βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἑλλήνων). Although the accession of the young monarch was initially regarded auspiciously, his reign soon became controversial: Constantine's involvement in the Apostasia of July 1965 made him unpopular in broad parts of the population and aggravated the ongoing political instability that culminated in the Colonels' Coup of 21 April 1967.
The coup stood on scant legitimate ground until Constantine, as head of state, agreed to swear-in the putschist government, thereby legitimizing it; this act became the subject of much criticism. On 13 December 1967, he was forced to flee the country following an abortive counter-coup against the junta, although he remained de jure head of state until 1 June 1973, when the junta abolished the monarchy and declared a republic.
This abolition was confirmed after the fall of the junta by a plebiscite on 8 December 1974, which established the Third Hellenic Republic.
Constantine has never officially abdicated his throne. He has continued to live abroad since 1967, but enters and leaves his native country freely and has a house on the coastal resort of Saronida, outside Athens.

Constantine remained in exile after the vote in favour of the republic. It is difficult to imagine the circumstances in which he could make a comeback.[12] He was not stripped of his property or citizenship after the referendum,[citation needed] but he was strongly discouraged from returning to Greece, and he did not return until February 1981, when the government only allowed him to return for a few hours, to attend the funeral of his mother, Queen Frederika, in the family cemetery of the former Royal Palace at Tatoi.
There were also legal disputes with the Greek state, since Constantine was unwilling to pay taxes on his property in Greece while not being able to enjoy the benefit of their use.[citation needed] In the early 1990s, Constantine began appearing in the Greek media more often, while facing the continuing hostility of the socialist government of Andreas Papandreou.
In 1992 he concluded an agreement with the conservative government of Prime Minister Constantine Mitsotakis, ceding most of his land in Greece to a non-profit foundation in exchange for the former palace of Tatoi, near Athens, and the right to export a number of movables from Greece. The latter reportedly included privately owned art treasures from the royal palaces.[citation needed] As such no formal account of what was removed was ever given or needed to be given. In 1993, Constantine visited Greece, but the government became irritated[citation needed] by his "tour" around the country. Greek air force planes harassed Constantine and his party openly.[citation needed] Faced with increasingly loud protests, the government asked him to leave.
In 1994, the second government of Andreas Papandreou passed new legislation reversing the 1992 agreement and stripping Constantine of his property in Greece and his Greek citizenship. Constantine then sued Greece at the European Court of Human Rights, claiming ownership of lands worth in excess of €550 million. He won, receiving a monetary compensation of €4 million [13] for the lost property, with a far smaller sum awarded to his unmarried younger sister, Princess Irene of Greece and Denmark. The Greek government chose to pay out of the "extraordinary natural disasters" fund , but was not obliged by the court's decision to return any lands (the Court of Human Rights only awards monetary compensation).
Constantine, in turn, announced the creation of the Anna Maria Foundation, to allocate the funds in question back to the Greek people for use in "extraordinary natural disasters" and charitable causes. The court decision also ruled that Constantine's human rights were not violated by the Greek state's decision not to grant him Greek citizenship and passport until he acquires a surname, which Constantine refuses to take to date, citing the fact that his family has no surname. Additionally, he uses his royal title, citing international protocol.
The Greek Republican Constitution states that no titles of nobility are recognized by the Greek state for Greek citizens. *Wikipedia*

Greek Truckers strike forces military into action

ATHENS — Greece dispatched military trucks Friday to alleviate a nationwide fuel shortage caused by striking truckers which has disrupted freight transport and travel in the busy tourist season.
"The armed forces with their own means are already assuring the supply of critical sectors such as airports, electricity plants and hospitals," the government said after a crisis cabinet meeting.
"Navy landing craft will also contribute if necessary to cover the needs of islands by transporting tanker trucks," it added.
The authorities, which had issued a civil mobilisation order on Wednesday that the strikers ignored, added that truckers who continued to defy the law would be prosecuted and their operating licenses could be forfeited.
Five people including a policeman were injured on Thursday in a clash between striking truckers and riot police outside a refinery near Thessaloniki, northern Greece, the semi-state Athens News Agency reported.
"We exhausted every limit of good faith," Transport Minister Dimitris Reppas said after the cabinet meeting.
"The state is not unfortified and society is not defenceless," he said.
The truckers, who have blocked most fuel deliveries since Sunday, had earlier decided to maintain their protest against government plans to liberalise the sector and reduce freight costs as Greece battles an unprecedented financial crisis.
"We will continue (the strike) in dynamic fashion," the head of the Greek truck owners confederation, George Tzortzatos, told reporters after a union meeting. A few hundred strikers later marched on parliament.
The government on Wednesday told the truckers to go back to work under a requisition order over growing concerns about fuel, food and medicine supplies and the fate of hundreds of thousands of Greeks and foreigners whose travel plans have been thrown into disarray.
But the process began haltingly with only a few hundred civil mobilisation orders so far handed out in each of the country's regions.
