Greek Band from Hungary - Mydros

In Hungary, The Greek minority presently includes about 4000 people. Most of the merchants who have settled in the 17th century have assimilated. The history of Hungarian Greeks reaches back to 1948, when in the first wave of refugees, 840 Greek children arrived to our country. About 6-8 thousand Greeks followed them during the early 50’s. Most of the refugees were accomodated in disused buildings, e.g. in holiday camps. More than two thousand Greeks lived together in a tobacco factory, in a very closed community. The only Greek village abroad, Beloyannis was built in 1950. These fellowships were extremely heterogeneous because the familes that lived together came from the most different parts of Greece. They taught their special folk dances and songs to each other with big enthusiasm, therefore the complete cultural heritage of Greece became familiar among them.
Our band, Mydros was founded in 2001 by young Greeks and Hungarians, who have already known the Greek musical culture. In the camp of Greek Youth Club it was clearly visible that those teenagers need a young, enthusiastic band, which is flexible enough not only to accompany the dance ensembles on the stages of musical and national festivals, but to take part in camps.
Our two main goals were shortly outlined : to keep young Greeks enthused about their culture and to familiarize Hungarian people with this music, this dance, and this type of recreation.
