Sophia Bilides sings and plays santouri (Greek hammered dulcimer) and zilia (finger cymbals). Smyrneika songs arose out an urban population where the music of Greeks, Turks, Jews, and Armenians influenced each other in the early decades of the 20th century. This vibrant cultural scene was shattered when conflicts led to the 1922 Asia-Minor Catastrophe. The destruction of the port city of Smyrna (Izmir) led to the expulsion of two million Greeks from their homeland. Fortunately, highly skilled refugee musicians managed to keep alive their urban musical traditions by bringing their cosmopolitan talents to the Greek mainland and to America. Speaker Biography: Sophia Bilides has been called the foremost practitioner of Smyrneika, a cabaret tradition that originated among Greek refugees in Asia Minor. A second-generation Greek-Italian American, Sophia was raised in New Haven, Connecticut, where the refugees of the village of Permata, including her grandparents, had resettled. She grew up absorbing the songs of their generation, heard at weddings, dances, church events, and family gatherings. Despite many other musical influences vying for her attention, Sophia was drawn to the hearfelt and highly ornamented singing style of her Greek Asia-Minor roots. With many of the elders gone by the early 1980s, source material came primarily from her mentor, Dino Pappas, an important collector of early Greek recordings. She also collected songs from community members willing to sing into her tape recorder.

Overview of the week - Monday the 25th is the final Mercury Saturn conjunction (exact at 8:55 p.m. EST) that has been hampering our enthusiasm since early October so trust that what comes up is finishing up a cycle of fear, uncertainty, committed focus, hard work, planning, challenging "travels", sibling or children situations. We also have a number of Moon VOID periods this week (appropriately enough for us in the US who are celebrating the Thanksgiving Holiday with the exception of retail workers at Walmart and a few other morally bankrupt retail stores). The Moon went VOID most of Sunday and enters discerning, discriminating and health conscious Virgo at 7:11 a.m. EST.

We are busy preparing, handling details and being of "service" through Wednesday. On Tuesday the Moon connects in positive and emotionally supportive aspects throughout the day.

On Wednesday the Moon goes VOID in Virgo at 6:44 a.m. until 5 p.m. EST when she ingresses relationship oriented Libra and we are emotionally driven to participate in "right relations." Venus also receives a sweet sextile from Mercury easing up the worry over resources (time, money, psychological or emotional) we experienced on Monday. Our thoughts and conversations are focused on the light, pleasant and charming. MERCURY is now past his SHADOW period that begin October 1st (the very day the Affordable Health Care website went live). We can trust the information flow, agreements, planning, buying/selling and travel are now functioning at full capacity.

On Thursday the positive vibes continue (as soon as we wake up) as Mercury reaches out to expansive, generous, and upbeat Jupiter in the sign of home and family, Cancer. Venus moves into opposition with Jupiter suggesting a desire for "more" - more drama, more connection, more excitement, more wine, and more food. Venus has been hard at work in serious and career drive Capricorn and are in the mood for a little more levity, extravagance and overindulgence (careful).

Transformational Storms of November 2013

Monday's Last Quarter Moon comes at a crucial time, as we prepare to leave the transformational storms of November for the even more intense configurations of December and the upcoming year. This phase in any case corresponds to taking a second look at everything that has been happening over the course of the pre-existing lunar cycle, with the idea of bringing the knowledge that we have accumulated into the next. As we mull over the previous three weeks, in keeping with these times of prominent Uranus-Pluto, we are likely to come to certain epiphanies regarding where we are headed with our lives, in a deeper fashion than the ways of the world nominally dictate.

This Last Quarter Moon configuration is quite interesting symbolically. For one thing, the Sun and Moon tellingly activate the spaciness and cosmic numinousity of Neptune; the Moon is in close opposition and the Sun is in square, each within about a degree of Zodiacal longitude, forming a T-square. With strong Neptune, we have the reminder that deep inside ourselves lies an otherworldly emphasis on insubstantiality over solid matter and for spiritual rather than material gains. We might be able to lament along with Wordsworth that "the world is too much with us," but it is rare that we have the spare cycles to be able to do anything about it. In a phrase that is even more meaningful today, two hundred years later, he went on to say "getting and spending we lay waste our powers/ Little we see in nature that is ours." This last part of the month of November might however be geared to some form of retreat from business as usual.

The emphasis on Neptune brings all three outer planets into prominence, since the Sun and Moon also aspectPluto and Uranus, in their extremely close 90-degree collision, re-emphasized in the chart of the Winter Solstice and due for another exact hit in the spring of 2014. Thus, once we pause to reflect, we can see that there is a transformational thrust to everything that happens to us now, together with an action-orientation since Mars is aspected by this quarter moon also. A note of optimism comes into this pattern as well, since Venus is opposite to Jupiter, while alternatively, the Saturn-Mercury conjunction that briefly forms for this occasion brings sharpness of mind and even a touch of cynicism to the fore.

With the personal planets so activated, we are in the soup, no way around it; stirred by events and inner fantasies, in whichever direction these might take us. We do well to plan, in whatever way we can, to allow the time and space to get more centered in ourselves. Once we do, and contemplate our lives from that true vantage point, we begin to see what we might have been missing — the message of our Higher Self. You can refer to this numinous influence, well symbolized in astrology by the outer planets, as the Universe, the Cosmos, God or Goddess, and it is the same. Within this perspective we are all One. This is so because the deepest level of the psyche directly corresponds to this higher dimensional awareness in which we all share.

Astrology provides a synchronistic chime with this vital perspective, one that we are all tuning into, as we can, and at whatever level we can plug in. The Sabian Symbol for the Sun in this quarter moon configuration gives us a beautiful message that relates to this process of ever-growing awareness. "Who do people say I am?" This was the question Jesus asked his disciples. Their reply was that people were saying he was one of the Old Testament prophets "raised from the dead." Considering the fact that the Resurrection of the Dead at the End of Days has not yet occurred, this begs the question: what did these people mean by Jesus being a prophet "raised from the dead?" The answer can be found by examining the belief systems of the people of Israel in those days. The concept of a End of Days resurrection of corpses originated with the ancient Persian religion of Zoroastrianism (of Magi fame) and was adopted by the Hebrews during the Babylonian exile. Both Jesus and the Pharisees believed in this doctrine of an End of Days resurrection as well. Reincarnation was also a widely held belief throughout Israel in those days and there is strong evidence in the New Testament that Jesus believed and taught reincarnation as well. So the answer to Jesus' question of, "Who do people say I am?," can only refer to people believing Jesus to be the reincarnation of an Old Testament prophet..

  

More evidence of reincarnation being a teaching by Jesus can be found in the belief systems of the early Judeo-Christians. One group, known as the Ebionites, believed the Holy Spirit had incarnated first as Adam and then later Jesus. Other  groups, such as the Elkasaites and Nazarites, also believed this. In the Clementine Homilies, an early Judeo-Christian document, also taught of Jesus having many previous incarnations. The Jewish sect of Samaritans in Jesus' day, believed the spirit of Adam had reincarnated as Seth, Noah, Abraham, and Moses. Even today, Orthodox Judaism teaches reincarnation. Also, many Church Fathers and leaders were believers in reincarnation. Most bishops of the early Church were pagan by birth and were well educated in reincarnational ideas. But ideas concerning reincarnation were later suppressed by the Church in the West because the Church of Rome viewed pre-existence (a teaching held by the great Church Father Origen and others) as heresy. But despite the historical changes of New Testament canon, a large amount of references to reincarnation can still be found there.

I looked up Scorpios on the net and found that they are the cars Rohit Shetty gleefully sends flying into the air. On further research I arrived at Scorpio the sun sign. I found that being a Scorpio implies the following list of qualities: determination, fearlessness, sensuality, poise, loyalty, ambition, intuitiveness, a jealous and controlling nature, secretiveness, resentfulness, ruthlessness and a tendency towards mystery!
Much as I would like to pontificate on all these wonderful (or not so wonderful) traits, I (as a true blooded Scorpio) am supposed to possess, I think ‘mystery’ is the one that lends itself most to fifteen hundred words on a good November morning.

As a kid, I was an observer of people. I remember observing that a legendary uncle of mine would assume a morose, pondering posture now and then and stare deeply into the universe as if it held a great secret only he could decipher. “Interesting,” I thought, “it gives him an air of mystery, I wouldn’t mind being mysterious too” so I began to stare deeply into space and pretend I was morose now and then as well.

It worked wonders!
The grown ups began thinking that I was a deeply philosophical little boy. This gained me some positive attention while I was actually just contemplating sibling strategy (like how to overhear the girlie talk my sister shared with her friends in her room).

Taurus Full moon Nov 17/13

This Taurus full moon occurs at the end of the eclipse season to bring about closure on the past month which has seen a number of very intense astrological configurations and a powerful taste of what’s to come in 2014. Conjunct the fixed start Algol, affectionately known as ‘the most malevolent star in the heavens’ (!) we could be forgiven for thinking this particular full moon is going to pack quite a punch. However, its relationship to Jupiter and Mars provides for a creative take on what once we may have deemed merely bad news.

One thing’s for sure: the cosmos is keeping us on our toes at the moment and this moon is no exception, for it gives us the opportunity to create something of substance out of recent challenges; something we can take forward onto the next stage of our journey. Which is where Algol comes in, because until we can recognise the value in looking our deepest fear, our biggest challenge, our greatest trauma square in the eyes in all its fearsome glory, we will be forever diminished by those aspects of life which rise up as if to break us. And we cannot afford to be diminished right now. There’s too much at stake and much more to be done!

The central message of this full moon is one of endurance. It alerts us to the need to endure in order to transform; that change does not come out of the blue in the blink of an eye, but step by step as we face our apparent demons to find them dissolving before our steady and unflinching gaze. The transformation required of us now is not one that changes the surface of our lives but the very depths of our being, the very roots of who we are. It rewires us so that we can no longer live in denial or ignorance of the consequences of being who we are, where we are and when we are. This is an age of awakening and as such we have to step up and take our part in what it means to be alive right now. And if we fail to do so, we still play our part regardless – quite literally – and that lack of regard will, itself, deliver its own consequences for us to navigate in due course.

Algol combines with the Moon at this time to remind us that the pain which we try so hard to avoid isn’t going anywhere until we encounter it and see it for what it is. Only then can it begin to shift and change into something altogether more creative, insightful and productive. Any lack of willingness to do so merely freezes it into stone, and a part of our heart along with it, until such time that we can turn towards it and invite it to speak its truths, which is how the healing begins.

So whilst this is not as comforting as some Taurean moons, it comes with a powerful kind of reassurance: that the more willing we are to feel the pain, the lighter our load will be. Such is the paradox of suffering: the very thing we go all out to avoid, in the moment of its acceptance, becomes a seed of grace. This Moon tells us there is nothing to fear if we can face the fear itself, for then we can act with clarity and wisdom, not from a diminished and intimidated place inside which cowers from the truth, but from a place of courage and strength which recognises the gravity of the tasks ahead and the importance of completing them to the best of our ability.

This month’s Taurus Full Moon casts light on the physicality of your existence. How satisfied are your appetites? Do you have enough? More precisely, do you have enough of what you want?

On Friday, February 3rd, Neptune moves into Pisces, where it will be for the next 13 years. This is an important transition and change as Neptune emphasizes the spiritual connection that encompasses our being. Regardless of the beliefs we currently have, the veils that separate the different levels of life will begin to dissolve to reveal all of life. This will generate a new understanding as the perceived separations that create differences in beliefs will begin to melt away. As all of life begins to be visible the different realms and levels of life meld into one reality.

Neptune moving into Pisces unveils the golden light, dawning a new era of spiritual understanding and awareness. Neptune moves into Pisces in February 2012, where it will be for the next 13 years. Neptune will begin to reveal that all of life is one. The death event is the death of the body but the true essence of the spirit is still very much alive. This will create many expansions of awareness, wanted or not, that even as people leave this world, the body is the aspect that leaves, but the true essence is still present and begins to be visible as still a resident within our sphere of awareness. Similar to the rays of light we can't see or the sound levels we can't hear, we will begin to see and hear all that is a part of life and the many aspects that represent life.

This transparency of spirit begins to become a haunting event for many who have thought that all that they have said or done are not visible. But the visibility of these aspects of each person will begin to be seen and actually take shape, as if the inside is now visible on the outside. VENUS CONJUNCT PLUTO SQUARE URANUS – NOVEMBER 14-15, 2013

Venus will be at 9 degrees Capricorn, conjunct Pluto at 9 Capricorn, squaring Uranus at 9 Aries on November 14th and 15th.  Whenever Venus meets Pluto, old lovers come back to haunt.

With Uranus involved, surprise is pretty much a given. The surprise may be who pops up. It may be how they pop up. It may be when they pop up.

The surprise may be the sheer number of old lovers you hear from, or it may be the intensity of the contact.

Hearing from an old lover is not always a negative thing but typically it stirs a person on a deep level.  With Uranus involved, these scenarios are likely to be disruptive.

For example, your partner’s  Uranian or Jupitarian ex-lover might contact them, in which case you may be deeply (Pluto) pissed (Aries). Challenge (Aries) and possessiveness (Pluto) play here.

Sometimes these contacts are  fairly benign.  In the age of facebook, it’s easy to find your high school boyfriend.  Many people do exactly that, pinging the person to check their availability.  So that’s one scenario. But other corpses contact ex-lovers, maliciously, knowing it will disturb and upset them. Keep this in mind!

Betrayal is also possible here, if not likely!  That doesn’t mean it’s going to happen to you.  But you’ll probably hear of it, or witness it.  Expect power struggles to erupt as well, and if you do mix it up with someone, it’s going to be “lite”.

It’s not going to help, that the moon will be in Aries at this time.  People will be more than willing to act (Aries) on their emotional (moon) impulses. This an intense configuration. I can see a lot of damage resulting from it.  If you want to avoid that, try to detach and examine a person’s motive as opposed to being overly reactive.

Some will meet their love (or money) karma at this time….for good or ill.  Volatility in the stock market / financial markets is pretty much guaranteed at this time as are reversals of fortune, both good and bad.
