Kyra-Frosini

Kyra-Frosini was the wife of Ioannina merchant Dimitrios Vasiliou, renowned in the area for her beauty and intelligence. As her husband was away for extended periods of time to Venice, on business, she met and had an affair with Muhtar Pasha who was the eldest son of the region's ruler, Ali Pasha.
The wife of Muhtar Pasha found out about the affair while her husband was away in Adrianople, went to Ali Pasha and demanded that he take action. Ali Pasha proceeded to arrest Kyra-Frosini in person and locked her up in prison along with 17 other women, also adulteresses. The arrest caused an uproar amongst Ioannina's Greek community and Ali Pasha hesitated to take action. Finally, two days later, on January 111801, he ordered the 18 women to be drowned in Lake Pambotis. The execution took place but the local Greeks came to view the women - especially Kyra-Frosini - as martyrs of their faith and nation.
Kyra-Frosini was buried with honours and her two children were taken in by the Bishop of Ioannina who was her uncle.
Many songs and poems have been written on the subject with the view that she was a Christian woman who had fallen but repented and was unjustly executed. *wikipedia*

Lefkos Pyrgos

The Tower was used by the Ottomans successively as a fort, garrison and a prison. In 1826, at the order of the Sultan Mahmud II, there was a massacre of the prisoners in the Tower. Owing to the "countless victims of Ottoman torturers and executioners", the tower acquired the name "Tower of Blood" or "Red Tower" (TurkishKanli Kule), which it kept until the end of the 19th century.[4]
The Tower was for centuries part of the walls of the old city of Thessaloniki, and separated the Jewish quarter of the city from the cemeteries of the Muslims and Jews.[4] The city walls were demolished in 1866. When Thessaloniki was annexed from the Ottoman Empire to the Greek State in 1912 during the First Balkan War, the tower was whitewashed as a symbolic gesture of cleansing, and acquired its present name. King George I of Greece was assassinated not far from the White Tower in March 1913.
The Tower is now a buff colour but has retained the name White Tower. It now stands on Thessaloniki's waterfront boulevard, Nikis (Victory) Street. It houses a museum dedicated to the history of Thessaloniki and is one of the city's leading tourist attractions. The Tower is under the administration of the Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities of the Greek Ministry of Culture. wikipedia

Alexander The Great

Alexander III of Macedon (20/21 July 356 – 10/11 June 323 BC), commonly known asAlexander the Great (GreekΜέγας ἈλέξανδροςMégas Aléxandros), was a king of Macedon, a state in northern Greece. By the age of thirty, he had created of one of the largest empires inancient history, stretching from the Ionian Sea to the Himalayas. He was undefeated in battle and is considered one of the most successful commanders of all time.[1] Born in Pella in 356 BC, Alexander was tutored by the famed philosopher Aristotle. In 336 BC he succeeded his father Philip II of Macedon to the throne after Philip was assassinated. Philip had brought most of the city-states of mainland Greece under Macedonian hegemony, using both military and diplomatic means.
Upon Philip's death, Alexander inherited a strong kingdom and an experienced army. He succeeded in being awarded the generalship of Greece and, with his authority firmly established, launched the military plans for expansion left by his father. In 334 BC he invaded Persian-ruledAsia Minor and began a series of campaigns lasting ten years. Alexander broke the power of Persia in a series of decisive battles, most notably the battles of Issus and Gaugamela. Subsequently he overthrew the Persian king Darius III and conquered the entirety of the Persian Empire.i[›] The Macedonian Empire now stretched from the Adriatic Sea to the Indus River.
Following his desire to reach the "ends of the world and the Great Outer Sea", he invaded Indiain 326 BC, but was eventually forced to turn back by the near-mutiny of his troops. Alexander died in Babylon in 323 BC, without realizing a series of planned campaigns that would have begun with an invasion of Arabia. In the years following Alexander's death a series of civil wars tore his empire apart which resulted in the formation of a number of states ruled by the Diadochi– Alexander's surviving generals. Although he is mostly remembered for his vast conquests, Alexander's lasting legacy was not his reign, but the cultural diffusion his conquests engendered.
Alexander founded some twenty cities that bore his name. His settlement of Greek colonists and the resulting spread of Greek culture in the east resulted in a new Hellenistic civilization, aspects of which were still evident in the traditions of the Byzantine Empire until the mid-15th century. Alexander became legendary as a classical hero in the mold of Achilles, and features prominently in the history and myth of Greek and non-Greek cultures. He became the measure against which generals, even to this day, compare themselves and military academiesthroughout the world still teach his tactical exploits.[1] ii[›]  "wikipedia"

Nipson anomimat mi monan opsin

Greek - Hagia Sophia

A label, which, according to tradition, was carved on a well outside the Greek Orthodox Church of Hagia Sophia of Konstantinoupolis:

Νίψον ανομήματα, μη μόναν όψιν
(Nipson anomimata, mi monan opsin - it turns out wrong in latin letters, as the Greek letter ψ corresponds to the sound ps)

It means " (When you enter this church) wash off your sins, not just your face".

In Greek, palindromes are called "cancer phrases", because they mimic the movement of the crab, which takes one step in one direction and one step in the other.
