Is Greek Food really Greek???

 As any of the latest naval stand offs between Turks and Greeks in the Aegean shows, the Greeks are not much amenable to the idea that their food might be indebted to Turkish cooking. It is commonplace for Greek food writers to introduce Greek cuisine as one “shaped through over 3,000 years of history.”¹ The sumptuous feasts described by Homer or Plato and menus from Athenaeus--all this will be described as part of the Greek culinary heritage. Sometimes it can get rather silly, such as the comment of one writer that “When you start your day with rolls and coffee, you are following an ancient Greek custom.”² One Greek writer went so far as to state that Greek cuisine is twenty-five centuries old and is the ur-cuisine that the Turks, Italians, and other Europeans borrowed from, not the other way around.³ Nicolas Tselementes was a noted Greek food authority who claimed the Greeks influenced western European foods via Rome; he traced the ancestry of such dishes as keftedes, dolmades, moussaka, and yuvarelakia to ancient Greek preparations that subsequently became masked behind Turkish and European names. He also said that bouillabaisse was an offspring of the Greek kakavia.⁴

The village of Avato, in the northeastern prefecture of Xanthi, is home to a unique community whose ancestors are believed to have come to Greece from Sudan during Ottoman rule

"What are you looking for, young woman? the village shepherd asks. He's got African looks but speaks in the local accent, a combination that would surprise anyone who accidentally wandered into Avato, a village 26km south of Xanthi, a city in northeastern Greece.

There, away from the eyes of the world, live the black Greeks of Thrace, whose ancestors came to the country during Ottoman rule as slaves of local beys (or governors).

Now Greek citizens, they are confused about their origins. Some believe that their ancestors came to the country as British mercenaries during the first world war. The roots of an entire village is a small detail in the sum of world history.

While Greece is famous for its beaches and archaeological sites, there's another form of tourism that is booming: medical tourism.

Greece is becoming an internationally recognised hub for IVF treatments, and leading the charge is Greek Australian doctor Kostas Pantos.

Since opening his Athens Genesis clinic in 2004, Dr Pantos has helped thousands of couples conceive, and he says more than 2,000 of those babies have been born to Australian families.

His clinic has seen a huge jump in applications from Australia and around the world thanks to word of mouth and ideal conditions in Greece.

"At the moment Greece is a hot spot concerning in vitro fertilisation," Dr Pantos tells Neos Kosmos.
